Library Services

The Library of Sir Rashbehari Ghosh Mahavidyalaya provides a range of academic and information services to support the teaching-learning process and promote independent study, reading and intellectual development among students and faculty members. The Library continuously strives to provide a user-friendly and resource-rich learning environment in accordance with the academic needs of the College.

Major Library Services

1. Circulation / Lending Service: The Library provides book lending facilities to eligible students and faculty members through the Library membership system. Users can borrow books in accordance with the prescribed Library rules.

2. Reading Room Service: A dedicated reading facility provides students with a quiet and comfortable environment for reading, study, examination preparation and academic work.

3. Reference Service: The Library provides assistance in locating appropriate books, reference materials and other information resources required for academic study and assignments.

4. Textbook and Reference Book Service: Students have access to textbooks and reference materials relevant to their courses and subjects, helping them to supplement classroom learning.

5. Periodical Service: The Library provides access to magazines and academic periodicals to encourage current awareness and broaden students' knowledge beyond their prescribed syllabus.

6. Digital Library and E-Resource Service: The Library facilitates access to digital academic resources and online learning materials.

7. Online Information Service: The Library supports users in accessing online academic information, electronic resources and educational materials relevant to their courses and areas of study.

8. Current Awareness Service: New books, important academic resources, Magazines and other useful information are brought to the attention of library users to promote regular reading and awareness of current developments.

9. Competitive Examination Support: The Library provides study materials and reference resources useful for students preparing for various competitive examinations, entrance examinations and higher studies.

10. User Guidance and Assistance: Library users receive necessary guidance from the Library staff regarding the location and use of books, reference materials and available information resources.

Towards a Modern Learning Environment

The Library aims to evolve from a traditional book-centred facility into a modern learning and information centre, integrating print resources with digital resources and providing students with opportunities for reading, self-learning, research and lifelong learning.

The College also maintains a Library Sub-Committee as part of its academic and administrative structure, reflecting the institutional importance given to the development and management of Library services.

Library Rules & Regulations

The Library is a shared academic space dedicated to reading, learning and knowledge creation. All users are expected to maintain discipline and cooperate with the Library staff to ensure a peaceful and productive environment.

General Rules

  1. All students and other users must carry their valid Library Card while using the Library.
  2. The Library Card is non-transferable and must not be used by another person.
  3. Users must maintain silence inside the Library and Reading Room.
  4. Mobile phones should be kept on silent mode. Phone calls and activities that disturb other readers are strictly prohibited.
  5. Eating, drinking, smoking and chewing tobacco/gutkha or similar substances are not permitted inside the Library.
  6. Bags, umbrellas and other personal belongings should be kept in the designated area, wherever such facility is available. Users are responsible for their personal belongings.
  7. Books, journals and other Library materials must be handled carefully.
  8. Users must not write on, underline, fold, tear or otherwise damage Library materials.
  9. Books and other materials taken from the shelves for consultation should be left at the designated place or handed over to Library staff rather than being improperly re-shelved.
  10. Magazines, journals and reference materials should be used carefully and returned to their proper place after consultation.
  11. Users must not reserve seats in the Reading Room by leaving personal belongings unattended.
  12. Photography, video recording or any activity that disturbs other readers may be restricted by the Library authority.
  13. Users must maintain cleanliness and use the Library furniture, equipment and facilities responsibly.
  14. Students must comply with the instructions of the Library staff.
  15. Any form of misconduct, indiscipline or behaviour that disturbs the academic environment of the Library may result in withdrawal of Library privileges and/or disciplinary action according to College rules.

Use of Digital Resources

  1. Digital resources, computers and internet facilities provided by the Library should be used primarily for academic and educational purposes.
  2. Users must not access, download, copy or distribute unauthorized or illegal material through Library facilities.
  3. Users should respect copyright, licensing conditions and the terms of use of electronic resources.

Book Return and Clearance

  1. All books must be returned within the prescribed loan period.
  2. Students must clear all outstanding library books, fines and other dues before obtaining a Library Clearance/No-Dues Certificate.
  3. Final-year students and students leaving the College must return all Library materials before completion of their course/official clearance process.

Important Notice

The Library reserves the right to revise these rules and regulations from time to time in the interest of maintaining an effective, disciplined and student-friendly learning environment.

The decision of the Library Authority regarding the interpretation and implementation of Library rules shall be final, subject to the rules and regulations of the College.

LIBRARY BOOK LENDING RULES

  1. Library Membership: Students must possess a valid Library Card to borrow books from the Library.
  2. Lending Period: A student may borrow a library book for a maximum period of 10 (ten) days.
  3. Due Date: The borrowed book must be returned or renewed on the 11th day.
  4. Renewal: A book may be renewed, subject to its availability and demand from other users. Books reserved or required by other users may not be renewed.
  5. Overdue Fine: If a student fails to return or renew the book on the due date, an initial fine of ₹10/- will be imposed.
  6. Additional Fine: In addition to the initial ₹10/- fine, an additional fine of ₹2/- per day will be charged for every subsequent day of delay until the book is returned or renewed.
  7. Responsibility of the Borrower: The borrower is responsible for the safe custody and proper condition of the book issued against their Library Card.
  8. Damage or Loss: In case of loss, damage, mutilation, or serious defacement of a library book, the borrower shall be required to compensate the Library as per the rules prescribed by the College/Library Authority.
  9. Marking or Writing: Students must not write, underline, highlight, fold, tear, or otherwise damage the pages of library books.
  10. Non-Transferable: Books issued to a student must not be lent or transferred to another person. The student in whose name the book is issued will remain responsible for it.
  11. Return of Books: Books must be returned directly to the Library within the prescribed lending period. Students should ensure that the return of the book has been properly recorded by the Library.
  12. Library Clearance: All borrowed books must be returned and all outstanding fines or dues must be cleared before obtaining Library Clearance/No-Dues Certificate.
  13. Recall of Books: The Library Authority may recall any issued book before the due date whenever necessary for academic or administrative purposes.
  14. Compliance with Rules: All students are required to follow the Library rules and instructions issued by the Librarian/Library Authority from time to time.
  15. Final Authority: In matters concerning the interpretation and implementation of Library Rules, the decision of the Librarian/Library Authority shall be final, subject to the rules and regulations of the College.

Important Notice

Students are requested to return or renew their borrowed books on or before the due date to avoid payment of overdue fines.
